iPad Air 5 review
At its March 2022 event, Apple unveiled the iPad Air 5 alongside the new iPhone SE, promising significant performance improvements over its predecessor. It has 5G connectivity and faster USB-C transfer speeds, but it also has the same Apple M1 chipset as the company’s top-tier iPad Pro lineup – and all without a price increase.
Colors
With such a dramatic redesign on offer from the fourth-generation iPad Air, it’s not surprising that the iPad Air 5 looks almost identical to its predecessor, complete with the same 10.9in Liquid Retina display, Touch ID within the Power button, and all-screen design – but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. According to Apple, it is still 3x thinner and 4x lighter than competitive Windows laptops at a comparable price point.
However, while the overall form aspect remains identical, a new color choice is now available. Space Grey, Starlight, Pink, and Purple color will be in the new iPad air.
M1 Processor
The chipset is one of the significant advancements for this year’s iPad Air 5, as predicted in a last-minute rumor ahead of the March Event. While many expected the iPad Air to use the A15 Bionic chipset found in the iPhone 13, it uses the same Apple M1 chipset as the top-end iPad Pro line.
That marks significant performance gains over its predecessor. Apple claims a 60% increase in CPU performance and a 2x increase in graphics performance, making it more potent than comparable Windows laptops at a similar price.
The enhanced 16-core neural engine improves AI performance, which could be especially beneficial for creatives who use photo editing apps on the iPad Air 5.
While some may find it unusual that the iPad Air may get the same processor as the iPad Pro series, bringing the Air in line with the 11in Pro, it’s important to note that the chipset is only one differentiation. The Pro series retains the superior XDR display with 120Hz ProMotion technology, and Face ID remains a Pro exclusive. Because of the interoperability with the Magic Keyboard, Apple is likely to pitch both tablets as PC replacements.
5G
Like the Mini before it, the iPad Air 5 has made the transition to 5G connectivity, offering significantly faster download and upload speeds if you choose the cellular model – and, of course, live somewhere with 5G.
Center Stage camera
The new iPad Air 5 has the same updated 12-megapixel ultra-wide front-facing camera as the rest of the iPad lineup, which also supports Center Stage camera technology. Those who haven’t tried the technology yet utilize artificial intelligence to track your face and body when you move around in front of the iPad, making it easier to do things like cook supper while conversing on FaceTime.
Pricing of the iPad Air 5
The new iPad Air 5’s price starts from $599 in the US and the UK at £569. This new price compares to the previous one it’s not so different. This is the best budget iPad ever compared to the iPad Pro.
